The Committee

The Hist’s Committee consists of 24 members, 10 Officers and 15 Members of Committee (MCs). Each of the Officers head up departments, except for the Auditor, Senior Member of Committee (SMC) and Equity & Inclusion Officer, which the MCs are sorted into. The Committee is elected in April, with the formal handover happening during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on the last teaching week of the year, and the practical handover occurring after exams during the Joint Committee Meeting (JCM).

Auditor

The Auditor is the Chair of the Committee, and the head of the Hist as a whole. They are ultimately responsible for all aspects of the Hist, but mainly they are in charge of convening regular Committee meetings, supporting other members of Committee in their roles, setting the general aims of the Session, and generally keeping things in order. Treasurer (Treas)

The Treasurer is in charge of the Hist’s finances and of timekeeping during debates. They manage the Hist’s relationships with its sponsors alongside the Auditor, make grant applications, and set the budgets for each of the departments, as well as maintaining the accounts throughout the Session. They are also the Vice-Auditor, being ultimately in charge when the Auditor is unavailable. The Treasurer for this Session is Ella O’Neill, who you can reach at treasurer@thehist.com

Correspondence Secretary (CorrSec)

The Correspondence Secretary is in charge of the Hist’s weekly Chamber debates, setting the motions, inviting guests, and deciding the speaking orders for each debate. They are also in charge of the Oratory Returns, which are used to score speakers at Chamber debates, and calculate who will receive the Hist’s Medals for Oratory. Records Secretary (RecSec)

The Records Secretary is in charge of taking and reading the minutes at all Chamber debates and Committee meetings, and of appointing the Robinson Subcommittee. They also organise the Maidens competition and the R&L (Records & Libraries) debate which is run by the novices. They informally act as the main point of contact and representative for novices and freshers in the Hist. Censor

The Censor is in charge of the Hist’s public relations, including managing the Hist’s social media, writing weekly emails, and designing posters and other materials such as the HistOracle. They are also responsible for taking photographs and videos of events as well as maintaining the website. The Censor for this Session is Marykate Donohoe, who you can reach at censor@thehist.com  

Librarian (Lib)

The Librarian is in charge of the Hist’s library and of our schools debating competitions. They organise the Hist Schools and Girls Maces, and the Leinster Schools competition in collaboration with UCD’s Literary & Historical Society. They are also in charge of Garda vetting in the Hist. Debates Convenor (DC)

The Debates Convenor is in charge of all aspects of Competitive debating within the Hist. This includes debate training, convening internal competitions, organising external competition attendance and convening the major Trinity competitions with the Phil. Events Convenor (Ents)

The Events Convenor organises all of the Hist’s social events, such as Hist Ball and Histmas, as well as coordinating our programs for Freshers’ Week and Refreshers’ Week with the other officers. The Events Convenor for this Session is Arabella Ware, who you can reach at events@thehist.com

Senior Member of Committee (SMC)

The Senior Member of Committee is in charge of maintaining the GMB, as well as looking after the welfare of the MCs. They also are responsible for the post-debate receptions, ensuring that we have drinks and snacks for all of the audience after each debate. Equity & Inclusion Officer (Equity)

The Equity & Inclusion Officer is in charge of maintaining the Hist’s Equity & Inclusion policy, responding to access requests and dealing with any conduct issues that may arise during a Session.
