SCHOOLS DEBATING

Debating workshop in the GMB for students from Santa Sabina

Throughout the year, the Hist organises several schools debating competitions. These competitions help secondary school students get involved in debating, develop their skills, and meet new people. They are also an excellent way for university students to get involved in the Hist. Anyone can judge, regardless of their debating experience! The Librarian will organise judging workshops before competitions to teach members the basics of judging.

The Leinster Schools Debating Competition is run in conjunction with the L&H, a debating society in UCD, and runs throughout both terms.

Hist Schools Mace 2023

The Hist also runs two weekend long schools competitions. The Hist Mace is in the first semester, and is open to all students and judges. The Hist Girls Mace is in second semester and is open only to women and non-binary people. This competition aims to increase and encourage the participation of women and non-binary people in debating and judging.

Volunteers are essential for any schools competition run by the Hist, so if you have any interest in judging or helping out, please fill out the sign up form in the weekly email or contact the librarian, Jane Freyer, at schoolshist@gmail.com. You won’t regret it!
